<image:caption>“Rolling Green Park - Defenders Auxiliary picnic [name]” B&W photograph. June 23, 1939. 3” x 2 1/2”. Found in Raleigh, NC. This little Photomatic print is quite a gem. I found it in Raleigh, NC but according to what is written on the back, it was made at Rolling Green Park, an amusement park located between the towns of Selinsgrove and Sunbury, PA. The park is long gone but it offered different recreational activities, events, and performances. Some people even lived in cottages as permanent residents. Machines like the one that produced this portrait were patented in 1925 by Russian immigrant, Anatol Josepho. In my opinion, the photobooth deserves more credit as a pivotal photographic innovation, as it brought the sitter and finished product closer together than ever before. Instead of handing over film to be processed, and picking it up days later, a photo could be had in minutes. Two decades later, however, the world was introduced to something even more remarkable: Polaroid instant film. Eventually, some photobooths started producing photos using instant film, sometimes with several exposures appearing on one Polaroid. Of course, as of today, photobooths generally utilize a digital process.</image:caption>

New Year's Eve 61-62" B&W silver print, 3.25" x 4.25” Found in Raleigh, NC I mistook this for a Polaroid at first but there are several things that indicate it isn’t. Paper fibers are visible on the front and back, and the image area is just off center. Additionally, there is not a Polaroid manufacturing code. However, according to this document they were not implemented until 1968. A reliable way to interpreate these codes has not been published.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Woman infront of an old farm house (with a skylight? or?). Polaroid, Approximately 1996. 3.25” x 4.25” Found in Philadelphia, PA While I previously thought this Polaroid was older, according to this document published by Polaroid in 1998, it is from the 1990's. Based on the code on the back, H6V010201H, it is from a pack of B&W 667 coaterless film (10 frames) and was made in Scotland (Vale of Leven) in 1996. What appears to be sepia tone is discoloration and slight mirroring, which can be attributed to a number of things but mainly the inherent instability of the Polaroid format (though some instant films are more stable than others) Above all else, it has probably suffered some deterioration due to how it has been stored. After all, I found it in a plastic storage bin at a reuse center.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Grace - Minister, Aurora - Groom, Polly - Bride.” B&W silver prints. May 22, 1927, 4.25” x 5” (pair). Found in Philadelphia, PA Part of the challenge and delight of dealing with orphaned/found photos is the uncertainty that comes along with identification and interpretation. I spent time discussing these images in class several months ago with my peers. Some observations that have only produced more questions: The tape does not appear to be terribly old, as it has not yellowed or cracked; Upon magnification, the minister, Grace, is seen holding an album of audio records; The spellings of Willamina and Wilhelmena: was this a simple spelling mistake? Perhaps the recipient or creator of the images?; Is this an instance of early gay marriage or is it a performance of some sort?; Does the distinction between Polly and Pauline correlate with that of Willamina/Wilhelmena in some way?; Was Marie a witness and/or friend? These are all things that would have to be considered in attempting to ID the who, what, and where, of this photo. Assumptions should never be made, especially with photographs found in archives. More often than not, however, there is some kind of context that helps direct the viewers focus to certain aspects of the image. For now, the precise activities of Grace, Polly, Marie, and Aurora will remain unknown.</image:caption>

Photo Car" Victorian cabinet card, Late 19th c, 6.5" x 4.25" Found in Wilkes-Barre, PA I acquired this card because of the watermark-like stain left on the photograph from what may have been another photo made by Arundel Hull of Fremont, Nebraska during the late 19th century. A.C. Hull was assistant to William Henry Jackson in his extenstive documentation of the early west, more specifically, the expansion of the Union Pacific railroad. With a blank back, it's hard to tell if this was in fact taken by A.C. Hull but the markings suggest it was in the company of his work at some point. An error in the making perhaps? In any case, I love the flaws, I love the colors.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A spread of technical drawings and photographs of machines from series XVIII: Ernest W. Drescher files. Bio/Historical Note: “Ernest W. Drescher was born in Erie, Pennsylvania in October 1908. He was the first child of his father William, a woodworker, and his mother, Emma Hemse, a housekeeper. They immigrated to America from Bavaria, Germany in the late 19th century, hence Dresher's evident ability to read (and possibly write) in German. At Hamilton, Drescher was deeply involved in movement design. Based on the records he kept, he also held a keen interest in the design of machines and tools used in watchmaking. This is reflected in the brochures, pamphlets, and other publications in his files, many of which are written in German, Swiss, or French. He died in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in July of 1985.”</image:caption>
